Football
as always been Llanharrys most prominent sport, earliest known
team going back to around the turn of the century. Two sides
from the village played against each other then, were known
as the "pops"the youngsters who drank lemonade and
the "Flagons" who were the older men who like a
glass or two of ale after the game, in those days they changed
in the Bear Inn and played on Bronwen field down by the M4
now. When the great war game in 1914 the whole side enlisted
and due to casualty the village did not resume with a football
side until 1922 when they entered the Llanharan league. Until
recently the clubs most successful period was the 1930's when
they came second in the bridgend league and won the much coveted
farquharson cup, with farquharson captain of Cardiff city's
1927 FA Cup wining team and jimmy Blair both Internationals
presenting the cup at Llanharry Welfare ground. The team followed
u with success in the Vale cup winning it in 1934 and 1935
when they were probably then in the Llantwit Major league.
After World War 2 Llanharry switched from the Pontypridd League
to Cardiff & Barry league where they won the Vale cup
several more times. Chairman in the late 1940's and early
50's was frank Endle, illtyd Morris was Treasurer and Les
Eden Secretary, Players included Billy Griffin, Freddie Bird(
With Cardiff City before War), Tommy John and Harry Howells.
Unfortunately for some unknown reason in the very late 50's
llanharry disbanded for about 2 years. In 1960 the club rejoined
the Barry & District league and won the Dockers Cup in
the following season and then going on to win every Division
except the first division in the Barry league. The next 27
Years saw Llanharry winning the Dockers Cup on Several Occasions, the
Barry supporters cup beating Rhoose in a memorable final with
a goal from W.Allen, A.S.R'S cup winners and goodwood cup
winners. Llanharry were at this time becoming known as ccp
specialists although having great sides Llanharry consistently
denied them the top league honors in 1980 they won the much
conveted Greyhound cup at Ynysharad park, Pontypridd beating
Rhydfelin in the final. It was shortly after this that the
club applied for admission to South Wales amateur league but
were turned down. The mid 80's were a struggle for Llanharry
with pitch problems after the Water board ripped up the field,
but the club struggled on. In the 87/88 season Llanharry decided
to leave the Barry League and join the Bridgend League. In
their first Season Llanharry won the the Division 1 league
and challenge shield. Llanharry then finished near the top
in the Bridgend Premier League for several seasons finishing
runners up in 91/92. In 92/93 season Llanharry won the Premier
League title and were promoted to the South Wales Amateur
